What you need to know about the new ‘bulk’ U.S. military drone deal
This week the Defense Department signed an $8.7 billion contract with the private aerospace company Orbital ATK to deliver a new military drone for use in the war on terrorism.
The contract is valued at nearly $1 billion, and Orbital ATK expects to deliver the $400 million Raven-S3 to the U.N. next year.
The drone is intended to replace a fleet of Russian drones that are currently operating in Syria and Iraq, with the intention of replacing those drones with more modern versions that will be able to carry more weapons and have greater range.
The deal also calls for the acquisition of four additional Raven-based drones for the U.
